Federico Yuchengco came from a Chinese mestizo family. In the language of the Spaniards, he was considered a mestizo de Sangley, a mix between a pure Chinese and an indigenous Filipino or indio. The long history of the Chinese mestizos were found in Binondo, their oldest settlement in the Philippines. Years and years of cultural exchange in the historic district produced children of intermarried ethnicity and, of course, blooming businesses manned by merchants. Federico was a product of both. And, thus, he was expected to run the ceramics store that has been run by the Yuchengcos for one hundred and fifty years.
