"Absolutely confused, not to mention rather terrified. One minute, I'm talking to Ember in the plane and the next thing I knew, I was lying on sand." says Kylie Shay, daughter of Apollo and the Lieutenant Head Counselor for Apollo Cabin explaining what she felt after knowing that they got stranded on an unknown island far from camp. According to the survivors, they were going away for a while from camp to have a vacation break. However, the plane they rode on was struck by what they suspect to be a lightning on a huge thunder cloud and the next thing they knew was that they lay unconscious on the island’s shoreline on the last week of December and survived until the end of January. Surviving with them are two mortals – a renowned botanist called Steven Norris who was with them when the plane had crashed and a native on the island for about three to four months named Cole. “Oh, and we also did knock them out in another time and lied about the monster being animals.” says Rian Dales, son of Hephaestus explaining how they managed for fend off the numerous monsters that attacked them. When asked how ever she dealt with survival in the wild, Ember Glass, daughter of Zephyrus and Zephyrus Cabin Head Counselor, replied, “Most of my training came from home. Here was just polishing, so in a way, it did.” As to where her training came from and how useful the camp ever was when it came to these unexpected situations. When interviewed, in general, they believed that their secrets to their survival and success were all about the value of teamwork and cooperation. “Teamwork. It's the most basic thing that a group should have if they ALL want to survive on unknown lands” says Shay. EDITORIAL First, let us define mortal stress. For teenagers like us, we rise and shine every morning, eat breakfast that sometimes may taste bad, take a bath / shower, dress up as best as we can, swipe our sitting bag from the corner and head off for “that” place. That place is none other than school, a torture chamber to some of us people. In school life, we deal with loads and tons of homework, schoolwork, and extra work from doing all these. Meanwhile, in between our school life lies: family, love, friends, money, material possessions etc. Inserting the word “stress” in these terms, we get: Family: Awkwardness with other members of the family, so-called closed family ties, over protectiveness of parents and arguments over things that you and your parents have different opinions on. Love: Oh gosh. Yes, many teens out there are already having young love. They get into break-ups and fights that they scream, cry and sulk in the corner, adding stress. Friends: It’s mostly on fights, arguments and things that you guys and gals don’t get along with. It builds up anger within you, making you go all volcanic and… Stressed. Money: First and foremost, you get stressed on this term because you don’t even have one; when you ask for money, you don’t get it, making you frustrated and of course, stressed on the fact. Material possessions: It’s the same as money. You don’t get what you need or want, and you go ARGH, UGH, NOOO, NO WAY etc. It creates stress. Going over, what is stress when it comes to demigods like me and you, dear reader? How many? Stress is SO MANY when you’re classified as a demigod. Even when you haven’t made it to Camp Half-Blood, stress as a demigod comes. Well, it is a natural process in the life of someone who’s born from the union of some divine Greeky person and a perfectly normal mortal. I’ll list down the things that can make a demigod stressed: Pre-Camp Stress Facts: All demigods have dyslexia and ADHD, contributing factors because you’re the child of a Greek god, and that you have innate battle reflexes. Reading un-Greek words tend to be hard on demigods, which affects their progress at school. Because of this, demigods get stressed on trying to read words. If you add getting stressed on being bullied because of your difficulties, you’re good to go to the world of Stressbourg. Mind you, that’s supposed to be Strasbourg, some place in France. Godparents leave their child and partner right when their children are born. This causes confusion to you when you grow up. Yes, they may hide the fact that your missing dad/mom is a god by replacing the spot with a stepparent. But, when you find out about the freaky matter, you get all brain-frozen, to a worse extent. Those things add to your stress factor. Dreams and weird visions in your sleep may happen, in case that your godly dad/mom has something to tell you. This will make you wonder, which eventually leads to #2. These dreams and visions can be scary, and may not let you sleep throughout the night. In the morning, you say? “Can’t sleep a wink”, “So tired” etc. For short, “I’m so stressed!” MONSTERS, weird creatures and the trouble caused by these folks. Yes, those are the top-ranking cases when a demigod hasn’t even reached Camp yet. You’re living your self-proclaimed normal life as usual, when a hellhound/empousa/manticore/giant scorpion/karkinos/etcetera jumps in front of you. That. Is. Not. Cool. Monster attacks are not cool, especially when it’s very the first time running into one of them. You don’t know what to do, get frantic, panicky, fearful, crazy and the things that Phobos and Deimos like. Lucky you if knew of your demigod existence long ago per a godly note or something, but if you’re the innocent type, the feeling is… OH NO. Running is mostly the first thing a demigod does when he/she encounters a creature. This makes you tired and panting. You get stressed? BIG YES. You get injuries from either being too clumsy on the way or being attacked unfortunately. Stressed. BIG YES too. What’s worse in monster attacks? Yes, you rescued yourself from your first attack, but you get attacked again and again! I learned from experience. You must have too. People who save you from attacks can be sources of stress too. You’re lucky if friendly satyrs and co-demigods arrive at the nick of time during a monster attack; however, you still get stressed from: “What the heck is that person?” “Who the heck are these people?” “What the heck are they doing?” “What the heck are those flashy lights, rainbow lights, lightning and water?” “Why are they holding swords?” These questions will all go through the recesses of your brain, confusing you all the way. “I must be crazy!” “What’s happening to me!?” Aside from getting stressed at finding out your family roots, you get stressed from what to do with unusual objects like pens that turn into bronze swords, wristwatches that turn into bows and coins that turn into axes. Some crazy guy (or maybe even your parent) gave it to you, and they told you that you’ll need it in the future. When the heck will I ever use an axe? When I get so fussed up on my Math teacher and hack his head off? Aside from magical things, abuse from stepparents, siblings and strangers can be a pain. That’s all. It’s pretty self-explanatory, man. Nothing to worry about, except for the stress of being beaten up, bad mouthed, raped, drugged, human trafficked etc. You do not only get physical stress, but mental and emotional too. Camp Stress Facts: Identity crisis, monster attacks, weird objects, weird flashy things are still present when you arrive at camp. Coping with these issues creates stress, but once you get the hang of it, you’ll feel like you’re the greatest person on camp that ever lived. xD Should you ever get the position of head or lieutenant counselor, you have to carry the responsibility of leading your cabin. Lucky you if your siblings are all well-behaved people. I don’t know how you will handle a cabin full of different people though. But if you’re as troublemaking as them, no prob. Do add challengers who try to get your position. Stress comes in fighting, and wailing in both physical pain and loss. Quests. Yes, quests. It all starts when your godparent suddenly pops in your dreams and tells you to go on some crazy quest and find something or save someone. Stress comes when you find questors, fight monsters, get hurt on the long run, find things on unexpected places etc. Powers are really used during quests, which leave you as wilted as a plant blown by Eurus’ wind. Of course, there are other stress factors when you come into the magical borders of Camp Half-Blood. It’s up to you on how you will handle your time, energy and schedule. Just don’t get stressed too much or you may end up lying in the infirmary. Official Start of Sign Up for the Third Phase of Lilith's Letter - The time has come. Preparations for the third and final phase of one of the most epic events to come to the life of a Camp Half-Blood and Broken Covenant demigod has begun. Yes, this 28th of March 2013, official sign-up for the third phase of Lilith's Letter has gone under way. Each demigod is given the choice if he or she wants to join a crossover mission (Definition: crossover mission means the two parties join forces in one mission) or if he or she only wants to join his or her own allies in the campaign. Once the sign-up ends, missions will be given to the participating demigods, who will put an end to of campaign, which all started with a mysterious letter from Lilith. In the light of the result of the Broken Truce, which was a tie, a combination of demigods coming from Camp and the Broken Covenant will take out Pagos, the main antagonist at the final part of the event. Official Start of Spring - As of March 20th, the official start of spring has begun. Saying goodbye to the frost, snow and cold of the winter season, we now welcome the season where all living things are reborn. Flowers begin to blossom, tress begin to gain the leaves they've lost during autumn, and warmer breezes begin to blow. One of the most awaited events that happen during spring is Easter Day. Aside from the religious traditions celebrated by Christians, it also marks the day where Easter bunnies and other people go around giving Easter eggs (hard-boiled eggs painted in color) and candies placed on neatly decorated baskets. Easter Day is a highly popular day for young children, for most of them have sweet teeth, and have an eye for cuter things. This replica of Athena is located at the replica of the Parthenon at Nashville, Tennessee. Athena Parthenos (Ancient Greek: Ἀθηνᾶ Παρθένος) was the title of a massive chryselephantine (gold and ivory) sculpture of the Greek goddess Athena, made by Phidias and his assistants and housed in the Parthenon in Athens. Its epithet was an essential character of the goddess herself. A number of replicas and works inspired by it, both ancient and modern, have been made. It was the most renowned cult image of Athens, considered one of the greatest achievements of the most acclaimed sculptor of ancient Greece. Phidias began his work around 447 BC. Lachares removed the gold sheets in 296 BC to pay his troops, and the bronze replacements for them were probably gilded thereafter; it was damaged by a fire about 165 BC but repaired. It continued to stand in the Parthenon in the 5th century AD, when it was removed by the Romans. An account mentions it in Constantinople in the 10th century. Description of Athena Parthenos: According to Pausanias,a historian, “ ...The statue itself is made of ivory, silver and gold. On the middle of her helmet is placed a likeness of the Sphinx ... and on either side of the helmet are griffins in relief. ... The statue of Athena is upright, with a tunic reaching to the feet, and on her breast the head of Medusa is worked in ivory. Replica of Athena Parthenos at Nashville A modern replica by Alan LeQuire stands in the reproduction of the Parthenon in Nashville, Tennessee. LeQuire, a Nashville native, was awarded the commission to produce the Parthenon's cult statue. His work was modeled on descriptions given of the original. The modern version took eight years to complete, and was unveiled to the public on May 20, 1990. The modern version of Athena Parthenos is significant because of its scale and its attention to recreating Phidias' work. The statue adds an additional dimension of realism to the replicated Parthenon, whose interior east room (the naos) was merely a large empty hall prior to the statue's unveiling. The reproduced Athena Parthenos gives visitors the impression that they truly are inside an ancient place of worship. The Nashville Athena Parthenos is made of a composite of gypsum cement and ground fiberglass. The head of Athena was assembled over an aluminum armature, and the lower part was made in steel. The four ten-inch H beams rest on a concrete structure that extends through the Parthenon floor and basement down to bedrock, to support the great weight of the statue. LeQuire made each of the 180 cast gypsum panels used to create the statue light enough to be lifted by one person and attached to the steel armature.
